Natick, Massachusetts is a suburban industrial center located on the upper basin of the Charles and Concord Rivers. From early Colonial days, Natick was a prime target for development, possessing good agricultural land, fish runs and water power. Natick had the first and largest Indian praying town in the colonies, which soon became the model for all other attempts to inculcate European standards into Indians. The great missionary, John Eliot, secured 6,000 acres for the Indians and converted them to Christianity. In its early days, Natick was an agricultural community with orchards and lumbering. Grist and sawmills were established and Indian ownership and control gave way to white dominance beginning in 1676. Local tradition claims that several men of Natick shipped out to the California gold rush in 1849 and 1850, returning with enough capital to start independent businesses. The first shoe sole manufacturer was established in 1827, and shoemaking soon became Natick's dominant industry. Shoes were shipped out to the southern and western markets. Natick saw a rapid growth in immigrant population including Nova Scotian, Italian, English, and Irish who came to take jobs in the shoe plants. By the 1880s, Natick was the third largest shoe production community in the country. Today, Natick has become an industrial suburb of Boston with heavy strip development on Route 9.
